I'm almost sure we have not done it "right" or the ways locals would do it, but we enjoyed the city in some ways and got puzzled by other staff. For example, to get out of the house almost anywhere would take you 30-40 minutes. Museum -- 30m, Beach -- 35m, Downtown -- 30m, Computer Caffe -- 30m. That's an hour in the car to access the benefits of living in LA, which is sad.
Just for context we've live in the Valley.
Good parts
Multi-cultiralism: there are so many people from all across the globe from China to Peru that you blend with the soup immediatly and just go about your day. Need a russian beauty services -- here you go, want a fresh sushi -- there is like 50 places and that goes for everything. While shopping for a car we spoke to 2 Iranians, 1 German, 1 guy I believe from Columbia, 1 American and 2 Indians.
There is everything: we spent 2.5 years in Georgia the country and don't get me wrong, that's a great place, but it does not have an Apple Store, Carhart & fancy french restaraunt in ... (you've probably guessed it) 30m driving distance. And LA has it all from family owned eateries to the highest tier brands and all the concerts you could imagine too. I appreaciated benefits of leaving in a BIG city greatly.
Nature: I adjusted my score after some consideration (visit to SF) and that's no longer an ideal weather, it's too hot in LA for my liking, but still very close to ideal.
Not so good parts
City crazy people: yes, there are people leaving on the streets, but it feels like somebody helps them out or at least clears out their camps. The bigger problem to me was that those people are seemingly connected to some wireless network I had no access to and their communication with the "higher powers" looks crazy.
Mess: most of the territory is being maintained okay and I might even say clean, but some places are just dirty with cardboards lying all other the place, trash being thrown on the road etc. Some parts of the highway system are loitered too.
Distances: one time we drove for 40 miles and were still in the LA metro area. And it was not even that far on the map, we just were not used that a drive to a car dealership could take THAT long.
Finishing thoughts
LA would be a great place to live for anybody who works in music / cinema / entertainment industry AND could afford the housing here. For everybody else, I'm not even sure it's worth visiting: San Diego is much more chill and it has the seals, SF is a better city and nature is wonderfull in all of the California.
